You have been commissioned by Side and Newcastle Contemporary Art to photograph Newcastle as it looks today.

Photographers have been recording Newcastle for generations. They photographed streets, shops, people at work, new buildings going up and old ones disappearing. Their pictures now help us understand what the city looked and felt like at different moments in its history.

Now it is your turn. We want to see Newcastle in 2026 through your eyes.

Your photograph could be selected for the Newcastle Now community exhibition at Highbridge Works and be published in the accompanying Newcastle Now newspaper.

Your Brief

Take photographs as you walk through Newcastle. Look for:

  • Streets Changing: Something being built, repaired, demolished, closed, opened or used in a new way.

  • Shops: Shopfronts, signs, windows, markets, displays, shutters and the places people buy everyday things.

  • People at Work: The people selling, building, cleaning, repairing, delivering and keeping the city running.

  • How People Use the City: Meeting, travelling, waiting, shopping, talking, eating or simply spending time together.

  • Old and New: Different parts of Newcastle’s past and present appearing in the same place.

  • Something Others Might Miss: A small detail, ordinary place or unusual view that catches your attention.

You do not have to photograph everything on this list. Photograph what interests you.
