Love of My Choice is a portrait project by German photographer Stefan Dolfen, developed in the early 1990s as part of the Unclear Family international photography workshops. Created during a longer-term collaboration with Side Gallery, the work explores intimate expressions of love through a series of studio portraits.

Dolfen set up temporary studios at Fishburn Community Centre in County Durham and at Side Gallery in Newcastle. Participants were invited to sit for portraits with the person or object they loved most, resulting in a quietly powerful and deeply personal set of images that reflect both emotional connection and self-expression. Each portrait is a negotiation of identity and affection, framed within the context of photographic authorship and trust.

Love of My Choice was one of several projects developed through the 1993 Unclear Family workshop based in Crook, County Durham, a pivotal moment in Side's engagement with international photography. Alongside works such as The Village is a Global World by Jindřich Štreit and Sunniside by Véronique Lesperat-Héquet, Dolfen’s series contributes to an ongoing exploration of community, emotion and representation.

Stefan Dolfen is a German photographer whose long-term documentary work explores the effects of social and political change on communities and environments. His projects often combine careful visual observation with a commitment to exploring underrepresented perspectives. Dolfen’s practice spans themes including identity, migration and the transformation of public space.
