Peter Bialobrzeski’s 1989 documentation of a Sicilian immigrant community in Wolfsburg, Germany, and on their annual return to Sicily. The work presents a dual portrait, moving between the structured routines of industrial Germany and the sunlit landscapes of southern Italy. It reflects the pull of two places, neither of which offers a full sense of home.

Wolfsburg, the home of the Volkswagen factory, became a post-war destination for many southern Italian workers. Bialobrzeski’s series follows one such community, exploring both their lives in northern Germany and their deep connections to their place of origin. Travelling with families on their annual holiday to Sicily, he captures the layered experiences of migration, identity and belonging.

Peter Bialobrzeski is a German photographer known for his distinctive approach to urban and social landscapes. Trained in both politics and photography, he studied at the Folkwang School in Essen following which he was awarded a one year DAAD stipend at London College of Communication. His work explores the intersections of globalisation, development, and identity, often focusing on the visual language of cities in transition.
