Jack’s Story is a documentary portrait of Tyneside socialist and lifelong pacifist Jack Sadler, who was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during both World Wars. The film traces his commitment to peace and socialism through the turbulent decades of the twentieth century, reflecting Amber’s interest in working-class political history and personal conviction.
Through interviews with his daughter Dorothy, the film explores Sadler’s role in organising pacifist initiatives on Tyneside during the interwar years. As Europe moved from the hope of post-1918 peace through the failures of the League of Nations to the outbreak of another global conflict, Sadler’s refusal to support any form of war became a defining stance. Dorothy, who joined him in opposing war in the 1930s, offers a personal insight into the beliefs that shaped their lives.
Sadler’s legacy is presented as one rooted in a deeply held belief that socialism offered the only hope for peace, and in a Christianity sharply critical of the Church establishment. In the 1980s, Amber interviewed several figures from the Tyneside Left active during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, placing Jack’s Story within a wider exploration of radical traditions in the region. More of these interviews can be found in our T Dan Smith Archive and No Pasaran interviews.
