Sovinec is a long-term documentation of life in the Moravian village where Czech photographer Jindřich Štreit was born, developed through the 1970s and 80s under communist rule. Photographing his own community from within, Štreit captured everyday rural life with a quiet intimacy and subtle critique. In 1982, he was briefly imprisoned, for, among other things, photographing a communist party meeting at which people were asleep. After his release, he lost his teaching job and was made to work on a collective farm, which became another subject of his photography.
