Today I'm With You is a 2010 documentary by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, serving as a follow-up to her earlier work, Byker from the 1970s. This film offers a portrait of the diverse communities residing in Newcastle's Byker Wall Estate, capturing the evolving cultural landscape of the area.
In the late 1960s, Konttinen, a Finnish photographer and filmmaker, moved to Byker, a working-class community in Newcastle upon Tyne, and began documenting its residents and environment. Her initial work focused on the terraced streets of Byker, which were later demolished to make way for the architect Ralph Erskine's visionary Byker Wall Estate. In Today I'm With You, Konttinen returns to Byker to explore the lives of its current residents, many of whom are part of the UK's asylum dispersal programme. She invites them to imagine their lives in 'just one picture', developing these ideas in improvised and occasionally chaotic sessions.
The film provides an intimate look into the personal aspirations, cultural traditions, and everyday realities of Byker's residents. It reflects the transformation of Byker from a predominantly working-class community into a multicultural neighbourhood, shaped by migration and resettlement policies. Today I'm With You not only documents these changes but also highlights themes of home, belonging, and identity, showcasing the resilience and diversity of the community.
