Cinemas

A photographic record of Lancashire’s local cinemas in 1979, documenting their architecture, decline, and place in everyday life.

The Cinemas project presents a series of photographs taken in Lancashire in 1979. It focuses on local picture houses that were once part of everyday life in towns and neighbourhoods across the region.

These buildings were places where people gathered for entertainment close to home. By the time the photographs were taken, many of the cinemas had already closed or were in decline. Some were converted for other uses. Others were demolished. The images capture a moment of transition.

The project documents the design, scale, and setting of these buildings as they were. It is a straightforward visual record of a type of public space that was common and widely used, but is now largely gone.

This work forms part of a larger effort by Amber to document social and built environments in the North of England. These images today serve as a reference point for anyone interested in how cultural spaces were shaped and used at the time and how our urban landscape has changed over the last few decades.
