USA Gas Stations & Stores is a 1972 project that tours small-town crossroads and two-lane highways across West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Arkansas and beyond, photographing vernacular gas stations that doubled as grocery stores and social hubs: from Pickens and Route 55 in the Appalachians to Valdosta, Georgia, Ozark, Arkansas and tropical-trail Florida stops like Oviedo and Orlando. Captured on the eve of the oil-crisis era that would hasten interstate bypasses and branded chains, the slides dwell on weathered clapboard façades, gravity-feed pumps, hand-painted signs and porch-front produce, evoking a roadside landscape where refuelling, shopping and community converged in a single, independent storefront.
