Shipbuilding on the Tyne

Education

Wallsend, North Tyneside

01 January 2019 - 31 December 2020

Witness the creative journey of Year 5 pupils of Carville Primary School, inspired by the challenge of documenting their community’s shipbuilding heritage with the help of former shipyard workers in an emotional return to the site of the former Swan Hunter shipyard.

The project film Shipbuilding on the Tyne is a showcase example of our flagship combined film and photography project model, evidencing the variety of educational impacts and soft-skill development of participating pupils as they share and reflect revelatory testimony about their learning journey and engagement with former shipyard workers during their exploration of the heritage and legacy of the former Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend.

This project became another beacon of our work, helping to secure the continuation of the programme post-Covid, through the award of repeated multi-year funding (2023-2026) from Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
