Co-Authored Narratives: Symposium

Events

Side Gallery

29 August 2025

Anchored in the North East’s long-standing traditions of community and collective labour, Co-Authored Narratives critically examines how collaborative methodologies in film and photography can generate more authentic and inclusive narratives. Drawing on the legacy of the Amber Film & Photography Collective, the symposium considers how shared authorship challenges conventional hierarchies between artist and subject, reframing whose stories are told and how they are represented.

Recognising both the regional specificity and global relevance of these practices, the event explores how co-authored approaches address both historical and contemporary social issues, from deindustrialisation to economic inequality. Through a programme of talks, screenings, and discussions,

Co-Authored Narratives foregrounds an artistic tradition that amplifies marginalised voices and offers a model for socially-engaged art rooted in trust, collaboration, and long-term engagement.

Side Gallery & Cinema has limited capacity. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis - to register your interest in attending please fill out the form below.
