National Coal Mining Museum of England

The latest exhibition to open at the NCMME explores the untold stories of women in twentieth-century British mining through the eyes of Guest Curator Jennifer Jasmine White.

This groundbreaking exhibition showcases artworks that highlight women’s significant roles and contributions to mining, as narrated by the women themselves. For the first time, their artistic impact on mining’s cultural history is celebrated, offering fresh and essential perspectives that resonate today.

From the Earth Comes Light includes work from the AmberSide Collection, which has rich connections with - and has long documented - the local coal mining industry. The exhibition features work by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen from Step by Step and Coal Coast and Isabela Jedrzejczyk's Striking Women. It also features an excerpt from Amber film The Scar, a drama exploring the lives of women in the aftermath of the last colliery closures in East Durham.
