Amber Films, 8 mins, 1973
An early Amber animation experiment, manipulating still imagery to create a shifting landscape of people and objects on a beach, Jellyfish generates a pervasive sense of unease, reflecting anxieties surrounding the nuclear threat.
Made by Peter Roberts, who joined Amber in 1971 after the collective moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, the film builds on the techniques he explored in A Film. Its use of photography paved the way for Amber’s later photo films, including Byker, Keeping Time, and The Writing in the Sand.
