Newcastle Now: Family Photowalk

Events

Newcastle Contemporary Arts (NCA)

31 October 2026

Grab a camera and come and photograph Newcastle with us.

Join photographers Sasha Mallo Tardiveau and Hazel Plater for an afternoon of looking, walking and taking pictures together. We’ll start inside Under Development: What Happens When Cities Change?, where families will explore how photographers have recorded Newcastle and other changing neighbourhoods over the past fifty years.

Then it’s your turn.

Young photographers will be given the Newcastle Now commission: show us what Newcastle looks and feels like to you today.

Sasha and Hazel will lead an easy walk through the city centre, with photography challenges along the way. Look for old and new Newcastle, things other people walk straight past, favourite places, strange details, signs of change and the people and activity that make up the city.

There’s no right way to photograph a city and no fancy kit required. Bring a digital camera, compact camera, camera phone or whatever you like taking pictures with. Adults can get involved too.

Photographs from the day can be submitted to Newcastle Now, Side’s new exhibition and newspaper bringing together photographs of the city today, including work made by young people.

Good to know

The walk will be an easy route around Newcastle city centre and will last around two hours including the exhibition visit. Please dress for the weather.

Every child must attend with a parent, carer or responsible adult, who must remain with them throughout the session. This is a family activity, so grown-ups are encouraged to join in too.

No previous photography experience is needed.
