Built in the 1970s on the site of the original Georgian square, Eldon Square became a flagship project in Newcastle’s drive to modernise its city centre. Designed to attract shoppers back into the heart of the city, the centre replaced much of the earlier architecture with concrete structures, enclosed walkways, and a large-scale retail environment. The photographs document this new urban space as it was taking hold, showing how architecture, planning, and consumer culture intersected in everyday life. Rather than charting a transition, the images capture the established reality of a development that had already reshaped the city's public and commercial identity.
