Produced by local union branches, miners’ banners were a familiar feature at annual gatherings such as the Bedlington Picnic. Rich in visual symbolism, they often depicted scenes from the coal industry, portraits of labour leaders or political figures, and slogans reflecting values of solidarity, justice and collective strength. Carried through towns and displayed during speeches and performances, the banners served both a ceremonial and political function.

Photographed during a period of industrial tension, the banners shown here reflect a moment when mining communities were asserting their identity and cohesion. They remain important artefacts of working-class visual culture and continue to speak to the traditions and histories of organised labour in the North East.
